Career Training News & Views

If you’re starting out or starting over in the job market, it can be hard to create or keep a positive focus, especially when it seems like all the news is negative. Putting yourself out there is stressful for everyone. And it takes a lot of energy to find out about companies, apply for jobs, prep for interviews, ace the ones you really want and cope with some inevitable rejections. It’s easy to get discouraged. Yet you know that next application might land a job, and the ideal job may come along at any moment.

We all love a little "wind beneath our wings" at times like this. A positive, upbeat coach sounds great, but are there any who are more than smoke and mirrors and won’t bust most people’s budgets?

Talking to career counselors, we found that many mention Jack Canfield as someone who fills that bill. They say he’s down-to-earth with practical tips, and shares them in friendly, upbeat way, talking “with” rather than” at” live audiences. Access to his advice is also affordable on CDs, tapes or books.

Canfield is best known as the co-author of “Chicken Soup for the Soul” and the CEO of Chicken Soup for the Soul® Enterprises, the company that publishes the popular series, which has sold more than 100 million books. Time magazinecalled the Chicken Soup series the "publishing phenomenon of the decade," and Canfield is no stranger to the major TV circuit on shows like “Oprah” and “Larry King Live.”

However, he became a career speaker and coach long before that, in the 1970s. He evidently enjoys it, since he continues to do it. Career counselors recommend a set of his early workshops for themes that they say strike strong chords for anyone looking for a job or planning their career, are especially helpful to build or re-build self-confidence, and carry a small price tag.

They’re called “Self-Esteem & Peak Performance.” Counselors love their videotapes that let viewers see the audience live, but say today’s more popular audio CDs grab and hold listeners’ attention, too, and have the advantage of being playable almost anywhere.

The Self-Esteem & Peak Performance series focuses on topics like:

  • Minimizing doubt and negative self-talk
  • Using his “Law of Replacement” steps to build self-esteem
  • Knowing there are always some choices, including the choice to say “no”
  • Why to eliminate the word “try” from any statement
  • Focusing attention on what’s most important
  • Staying “on purpose” when going after goals

Canfield has walked his talk, starting his career with a BA in Chinese history, and later earning a more practical master’s degree in psychological education.

More information about “Self Esteem & Peak Performance” and free resources such as newsletters, demos and quarterly teleseminars to which anyone can submit a question, can be found on Canfield’s web site http://www.jackcanfield.com/page/?PageID=2. The teleseminars are listed in training events. Many of his audiotapes and books, including “Peak Performance,” are also available on Amazon.com, where used copies can be a bargain.
