Computer Games Aid Musical Training

Computer Games Aid Musical Training

There are plenty of online resources for people wanting to learn how to play a musical instrument, but guitarist William Wilson has come up with a unique twist on musical training. Wilson’s website, GuitarGames.net features a series of casual-style video games to help beginners who want to learn how to read music or play the guitar.

Wilson originally developed computer games to aid his own guitar training while in his teens. Pleased with how well they worked for him, he decided to share the games with others.

"The essence of education is repetition. The games I have created on GuitarGames.net make the repetition fun," explains Wilson.

Based in California, Wilson was trained in the Romero Technique and has been playing classic guitar all his life. His professional career has included performing, composing and recording in a variety of settings. In 2002 he released his first solo CD, La Catedral, which features classical guitar music by Spanish and Latin composers.

Currently Wilson’s website features games such as Birds of Fretopia which helps students master the guitar fret board while collecting birds for the intergalactic guitar show, Chord Mines in which users dodge boulders and escape giant spiders while learning basic guitar chords, and Note Squish which teachers beginners how to read music. GuitarGames.net also features activities to help students with ear training, as well as guitar trivia games, and opportunities for competition with other players.

The games on GuitarGames.net are free for anyone to sample, however those who enjoy their experience can sign up for a premium payed membership that allows them access to more levels and setting in the games.

"As GuitarGames.net first appears, because of the cartoon format, one may say 'looks fun for kids.' The truth is all of us have a kid in us. So don’t let the lighthearted humor and colorful animation fool you. Behind this lightheartedness is an amazing collection of very effective teaching tools," says Peter Pupping, guitar instructor and owner of Guitar Sounds Studios.
